What is an ITIN?
ITIN Background Info
In 1996, the US Government implemented the Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) to allow individuals to process their tax returns without needing a social security number. If you don't use it for three years, you have to renew it. That's why we recommend renewing your ITIN application online as soon as possible. Along with your ITIN, you're also required to get an EIN Business Number.
How do I apply for an ITIN?
When you hire our help, our consultants check your application thoroughly to ensure all provided information is correct. After we review your application, we will print, attach all required documents and send it all to the IRS. ITINs take about 8–10 weeks to process.
Who needs an ITIN?
If a person lives in the USA for more than 183 days in a calendar year, they might need to file a US income tax return and if they don't have a social security number, they would require an ITIN.
Individuals who might need an ITIN
Resident aliens; step-children of resident aliens or US citizens; an individual that purchases and rents US real estate; a nonresident spouse of a US citizen or resident alien; dependents of nonresident aliens who are present in the USA; an individual who comes to the USA for temporary work assignments; someone who needs to file taxes but doesn't have a social security number; the estate of a nonresident alien who is deceased but must file a US Estate Tax Return; those who wish to invest in the United States, if they don't qualify for a social security number.
Is it difficult to get an ITIN?
The process is simple but it can be overwhelming and time consuming for some. You'll need a W-7 form and it must be attached to your first US tax return or other required tax documents. You'll also need to provide proof of identity. A valid passport is the best document to prove your identity. The IRS might ask you to send them your passport or a certified copy of one.
